Black Marabou Sculpin
Sculpins are elongated, tapered fish, usually with wide, heavy heads and appear like a small version of a catfish. These baitfish, which are often found in the rocks on the bottom of stream moving about in search of food, are a tasty treat for the trout. Perfect Fly Sculpins have been tested and observed in many different situations versus the real thing, and the result is a fly pattern that closely resembles the actual baitfish. As always, this means you will catch more trout, because the fly looks like what the fish are feeding on.
Note that the brown sculpin is recommended for clear water, but for stained or slightly colored water, we recommend the white belly sculpin. We also offer yellow marabou and black marabou versions of the fly for additional action.
Presentation:
For best results, fish it about an inch or two from the bottom, being sure to use the proper weight adjustment to keep it near the bottom. Should you choose to not add weight, the sculpin imitation can be fished in the shallow waters, pocket pool or along the banks. This would be an effective way to fish for the browns that often lurk near the bank under limbs or otherwise in the shade.
Alternatively, present the sculpin just as you would live bait, using an up and across cast. Let if float down with the current in fast waters simulating a sculpin that has been carried away with the current. You may also try lifting the rod tip up and letting it fall down to imitate the wiggle of the sculpin.
